Huddle

Pip the penguin has an egg on his feet and a long polar night ahead. The only warm place is the middle of the huddle, and the huddle does not stay put: in the wind, the penguins on the cold edge peel off and walk round to the sheltered side, so the whole crowd creeps downwind. Stand still and the warm middle slides away until you are the one on the frozen edge. Pushing through the crowd is slow; walking round the outside is quick but cold. Leave while you are still warm, rejoin on the sheltered side, and keep the egg warm until dawn. Later nights bring storms that turn the wind, and a second egg.
